Austrian Patent Office AT12 468 U1 2012-06-15
Description [0001] The present invention relates to a consumer article package having a discontinuous, tactile coating.
[0002] Tobacco and other consumer articles are commonly packaged in containers formed from one or more folded, laminar blanks of paper, board or other sheet material. Before being folded around a bundled bundle of smoking articles to form the container, the outer surfaces of the at least one laminar blank forming the outside of the container are typically imprinted, embossed, blind embossed, or otherwise printed and printed as manufactured by the manufacturer - or variety logos, brands, slogans and other information concerning the manufacturer, product or advertising.
It is known to coat the printed outer surfaces of packaging for consumer products with ultraviolet paint. In one known embodiment, an ultraviolet lacquer is applied to the entire printed surface as a continuous coating (continuous or flood lacquer). In another known embodiment, an ultraviolet paint is applied in selected areas or locations of the printed surface (local paint). Typically, high gloss transparent colorless ultraviolet paints are used to coat the printed surfaces of consumer article packages to form a bright surface.
It is desirable to provide a consumer article package that has a texture on the outside that provides a tactile sensation to consumers when handling the package.
The packaging of many consumer products is disposed of by the consumer shortly after purchase. On the other hand, consumers typically do not dispose of containers for cigarettes and other tobacco products until their contents have been consumed. Therefore, it would be particularly desirable to provide a container for smoking articles that has a durable appearance on the outer surface that gives a tactile sensation to the consumer each time he or she manipulates the container.
According to the present invention there is provided a consumer article package having a discontinuous, tactile coating. The discontinuous tactile coating is formed by applying at least one lacquer to the outside of the package in a pattern comprising a plurality of raised features (such as ridges or protrusions) having a height of at least about 10 microns and a spacing of at least about 20 microns have.
In the description, the term " varnish " used to designate a liquid coating which solidifies on curing.
Throughout the description, the term " height " used to designate the extent of the plurality of raised features in a direction perpendicular to the outer surface of the package.
Preferably, the plurality of raised features have a height of between about 10 microns and about 500 microns, more preferably between about 10 microns and about 100 microns.
The discontinuous tactile coating may be formed by applying at least one lacquer to the outer surface of the package in a pattern comprising a plurality of raised features of the same height or of different heights. Preferably, the plurality of raised features are substantially the same height.
Throughout the description, the term " distance " used to denote the distance between peaks of adjacent raised features within the pattern. Preferably, the plurality of features are spaced from about 20 microns to about 10 centimeters, more preferably between about 20 microns and about 1 centimeter, more preferably between about 20 microns, and about 12 microns apart about 0.1 centimeters.
The plurality of enhanced features formed by applying at least one paint to the outer surface of the consumer article package of the present invention provides the package with a new, durable, non-abrasive texture that provides a tactile sensation to the user results in handling the package during use.
Preferably, the discontinuous tactile coating has an adhesion coefficient between about 0.2 and about 1.0, preferably between about 0.25 and about 0.75, more preferably between about 0.3 and about 0.5.
The discontinuous tactile coating may be formed by applying at least one lacquer to the outer surface of the package in any pattern comprising a plurality of raised features.
In one embodiment, the discontinuous, tactile coating is formed by applying the at least one lacquer to the outer surface of the package in a regular pattern. Throughout the description, the term " regular pattern " used to designate a pattern having a regular array of enhanced features. For example, the at least one lacquer may be applied to the outer surface of the package in a regular striped pattern, a regular checkered or square pattern, a regular tile pattern, a regular dotted or dotted pattern, a regular honeycomb or hexagonal pattern, or any other regular, alphanumeric, pictorial or geometric patterns are applied.
In another embodiment, the interrupted, tactile coating is formed by applying the at least one paint on the outer surface of the package in an irregular pattern. Throughout the description, the term " irregular pattern " used to denote a pattern comprising a non-repeating or random array of elevated features. For example, the at least one paint may be applied to the outer surface of the package in an irregular ripple or wavy pattern, irregular swirl pattern, irregular spiral pattern, irregular whorl pattern, irregular woodgrain pattern, irregular tire tread pattern, irregular animal skin pattern (eg cow, zebra, Tiger, leopard, snake, alligator or crocodile skin pattern).
Preferably, the pattern comprises a plurality of discrete enhanced features.
By applying at least one lacquer to substantially the entire outer surface of the package in a pattern comprising a plurality of enhanced features, the consumer article package of the invention may have an interrupted, tactile coating on substantially the entire outer surface of the package be provided. Alternatively, a consumer article package according to the invention may be provided having an interrupted, tactile coating on only a portion of the outer surface of the package by applying at least one coating to only a portion of the outer surface of the package in a pattern comprising a plurality of raised features ,
The pattern may include a concentration gradient or distribution of the at least one paint per unit area of the outer surface of the package. For example, a concentration gradient of the at least one resist within the pattern may change between a first part having a low concentration and a second part having a high concentration.
A concentration gradient may be obtained by varying the surface of the pattern (e.g., by increasing the size of the geometric features or the font size of alphanumeric features of the pattern). Alternatively or additionally, a concentration gradient can be obtained by changing the height of the raised features in the pattern.
The interrupted, tactile coating is preferably applied to a portion of the outer surface of the package which is printed with a design comprising graphics, text or a combination of the two. For example, the discontinuous tactile coating may be formed by attaching the at least one lacquer to a portion of the outer surface of the package printed with manufacturer or variety logos, brands, slogans, or other advertising, marketing, or other product information. Alternatively or additionally, the interrupted, tactile coating may be provided on an unprinted or planar portion of the outer surface of the package.
When the interrupted tactile coating is provided on a part of the outer surface of the package which is printed with a design, the interrupted tactile coating may be applied by applying the at least one lacquer to the outer surface of the package in a pattern corresponding to the one or more features of the printed design. This advantageously has the effect of highlighting the features of the printed design according to the pattern. For example, the discontinuous tactile coating may be formed by applying the at least one lacquer to the outer surface of the package in a pattern corresponding to a maker or brand logo printed on the outer surface.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, the interrupted, tactile coating is formed by applying at least one colored lacquer to the outer surface of the packaging.
In addition to the new nature of providing a tactile sensation, the application of at least one colored lacquer to the outer surface of the consumer article package of the invention advantageously reshapes the outer surface of the package.
Throughout the specification, the term " colored paint " used to refer to a paint containing at least one colorant selected from the group consisting of pigments, colors and matting agents. The at least one colorant may affect the color and / or opacity of the colored paint.
The discontinuous tactile coating can be formed by applying two or more colored paints of the same color or different colors to the outer surface of the package.
Alternatively or additionally, the discontinuous, tactile coating can be formed by applying two or more than two colored lacquers of the same or different opacity to the outer surface of the package.
When the discontinuous tactile coating is provided on a part of the outer surface of the package which is printed with a design, the discontinuous tactile coating can be formed by applying at least one colored varnish or varnishes of the same color or different colors of the design is applied to the outer surface of the packaging.
Matting agents may be present in the at least one colored lacquer in an amount of e.g. be provided up to 50 wt .-% of the dyed lacquer.
Pigments and paints, the pigments and paints may be included in the at least one colored paint in an amount of e.g. between about 1 and about 45% by weight of the colored varnish, preferably between about 10 and about 20% by weight of the colored varnish.
The coloration range of the at least one colored lacquer may be between 0.5% and about 100%.
The at least one dyed lacquer may be any suitable pigment, dye or Austrian patent office AT12 468 U1 2012-06-15
